Jim Harkin

Jim Harkin is Professor and Head of the School of Computing, Engineering and Intelligent Systems, and a member of the Computational Neuroscience and Neuromorphic Engineering team within the Intelligent Systems Research Centre. Jim’s teaching and research focus on embedded and intelligent systems, including digital systems design, FPGA development and system testing.  

His research centres on the design of self-repairing embedded computers, drawing on brain-inspired neural network models to create highly efficient and reliable hardware systems. His work has led to innovations in Networks-on-Chip and the hardware implementation of self-repairing spiking neural networks.  

A co-founder of the medical analytics company Respiratory Analytics, he has secured over £3.5 million in competitive research funding and published more than 140 peer-reviewed articles across journals and conferences.
